Under One Roof
The rebuilt Bordeaux Farmers Market becomes a beacon of light on St Thomas Island – a dynamic community center that unifies residents, that provides shelter and support during storms, expanding opportunities for making and the arts while strengthening the voice and identity of this community.
Working with We Grow Food and the Bordeaux Farmers Market to rebuild after Hurricanes Irma and Maria left many islands throughout the Caribbean utterly devastated, the vision is to foster a new economic community that exchanges local food and goods and is a venue for amplifying what is already “growing” on the island, local food and building materials production, and the arts (crafts, visual, music).
The project will expand the market building to be a community center and storm shelter that can accommodate additional spaces for workshops, libraries, archival and food storage, and the production of value added goods (food, health products) while developing a forest garden that weaves fruit/nut trees with a functioning ecosystem for both short and long term harvest, and resilience to hurricanes
